Convento São Francisco de Mértola

Sytske Kok

“One does not discover new lands, without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time.” (André Gide)

The two months I spend at the Convento where ideal to unwind, empty myself and broaden my horizon. It was the perfect place to be alone without getting lonely. To reflect on life, work and read all the books I was meaning to for years, but never had the time for.

After emptying myself first and loading myself with new ideas afterwards, through books, the beautiful nature and the encounter with wonderful inspiring people at the Convento, it was the perfect place to create some new work.

As a filmmaker I usually write for the screen, but at the Convento discovered the urge to write children’s literature as well.

My natural habitat being the city it was a wonderful experience to be able to write and live practically outside. Protected from the sun only by the roof of the terrace of the little cottage, with views on the ancient city of Mértola, the river and orange and eucalyptus trees. Every now and then i was visited by one of the Convento´s dogs that came to see if I was all right.
