Convento São Francisco de Mértola

Bird watching

For bird watchers and nature lovers we provide excurions. The stay includes accomodation at the Convento, special early breakfast and guided excurssions by expert Colm Moore.

Colm Moore has written/co-authored three books and many papers on birds in Portugal, including the well known “Birdwatchers´Guide to Portugal and Madeira”. He was instrumental in founding the Iberian Rarities Committee and is an active voting member of the Portuguese Rarities Committee.

Colm knows the Mertola area intimately and has a cottage near the Convento. He can guide you through some of the best birding areas in Iberia, all within 75 km.of Mertola itself. Birds including, Red rumped Swallow, Black eared Wheatear, Great and Little Bustard, Black Bellied Sandgrouse, Spanish and Tree sparrows, Lesser Kestrel, Stone Curlew, Montagu's Harrier,Callandra, Roller,Thekla and Crested Larks amongst others.
Species seen on previous trips have included Griffon, Black and Ruppell´s Vultures together, White-rumped Swifts at nesting sites and breeding Audouin´s Gulls on the nearby southern coast of the Algarve.
