DANCES WITH FALCONS
'Dances With Falcons' is an illustrated book about Geraldine Zwanikken's many years of living with the Falco Naumany, an endangered small falcon that migrates from sub-Sahara Africa and finds breeding places at the Convento .
The book tells about the endeavors to grow the population from just two birds into the biggest colony of Falco Naumani of the Iberian Peninsula, peaking in 1996. The book has many observations, stories about rescuing the birds from decline and it describes how the first ever Falcon Towers were built. Above all the book is about enjoying living with this incredible bird for so long.
CREATING A LIFE
'Creating A Life' is a photo-biography about the life of dancer, artist and gardener Geraldine Zwanikken. Former dancer with The Dutch National Ballet Company. However, amidst a successful career with the troupe, she was overwhelmed by the creative limitations of movement; the use of the body in natural and emotional ways of expression. She established herself as a solo artist but again, at the height of success, turned to search for a broader and more meaningful, creative life. So, with her husband Kees and two sons (Christian and Louis), at last arrived in Portugal. There they rebuilt the ruins of an ancient Franciscan Convent in the remote village of Mértola. She is a painter, sculptor and tireless tender of numerous edible gardens, from which she eats something daily. While she has stopped performing, she has never stopped moving.
